This 2 volume work gives a popular history of the various people of India, geographical information, and a narrative of the history of various cities of India. the book is well illustrated showing panoramas, natives, and monuments. The first volume has 18 chapters that offer observations on : India in general, legendary India, under Hindu, Muslim, and British rule; the native people, and their manners; the book then commences its plan of giving the history of cities spread all over India. to take a few examples, the reader will find notices on : Bombay, Elephanta, Poona and the Deccan, Hyderabad, Golconda, Madras, Kanchipuram, Calcutta, the Himalayas, Khanchanjunga, Haridwar, Shimla, Kashmir, etc. The second volume covers : Attock, Peshawar, Amritsar, Lahore, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Palitana, mount Abu, Jodhput, Chitor, Udaipur, Agra, Lucknow, Kanpur, Sarnath, Banaras, etc. There is a chapter on Ceylon at the end of the book.
