The book presents a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the social and economic characteristics of Indian migrants settled in United Kingdom. The specific issues dealt with are causes of emigration, total amount of remittances sent home by the migrants and their mode of utilisation in India, assimilation problem retainment of Indian cultural values by these migrants in U.K., the views of their children regarding love/arranged marriage etc. The study shows that a vast majority of migrants sent a fairly large amount of money during 1960 and 1970 for purchasing land/ building houses/ making agricultural improvements. Since majority of migrants are not fully aware of various schemes including IBD's scheme introduced by the Indian government to attract investment from these migrants in India, there is a desperate need for giving intensive publicity for these attractive schemes. It is also revealed in the survey that since the British born immigrants children has been experiencing discrimination while seeking jobs and promotions, the British government should take concreted steps to stop this happening. The book consists of five chapters out of which two are devoted to theoretical and methodological aspects. Empirical work is presented in the remaining chapters using tabular analysis. The study is expected to be very much useful for students, researchers, economists, planners as well as policy makers as it provides a deep insight into the problems of Indian migrants settled in U.K. About the Author Dr. K.S. Dhindsa is a Professor of Economics at the Punjab School of Economics, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar (India). Dr. Dhindsa has a brilliant career, who after graduating from Punjab University, completed the post-graduate diploma in Economic Development from Glasgow University. Thereafter, he obtained his Master Degree from Leeds University (England). Then he went to London University where he successfully completed his Ph.D. He has authored two books entitled India's Export Performance Some Policy Implications and Indian Immigrants in United Kingdom : A Socio-Economic Analysis. He is also co-editor of a book entitled Dynamics of Agricultural Development (3 volumes). He has published a large number of research papers in national and international journals. For his post-doctorate he went to the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London during 1989-91. He was the editor of Indian Journal of Quantitative Economics, a journal of international development, during 1994-96. He was the Dean of Faculty of Economics and Business during 1992-93 and was Chairman of Punjab School of Economics, Guru Nanak Dev University, during 1994-1996.
