Many of India’s prisons date back to the era of British colonial rule, where prisoners are kept in crumbling facilities largely unchanged since the beginning of the previous century. There is an urgent need for reforms as the practice of punishment and public opinion concerning it has been changing due to the rapidly transforming social values and sentiments of the people. Thus, punishment can be used as a method of reducing the incidence of criminal behaviour, either by deterring the potential offenders, or by reforming them into law-abiding citizens. The objective of punishment can only be achieved by the prison institution.
