A comprehensive review of the first 54 years of the history of Malayalam journalism spanning a century and a half. An attempt has been made to study the history of Malayalam journalism in the context of world journalism and journalism in Indian languages. The literary periodicals in Malayalam in the 19th century also evaluate the role they played in the standardization of our language and literary progress. Newspapers are seen as the stage for the emergence and growth of new literary forms, innovations, the development and evolution of literary criticism and scholarly literature, and conflicts of taste. A useful study for students of journalism history and linguistic history alike.
