This penetrating volume entitled Mapping South Asia: State,Society and Security Dilemmas is based on the nature ofstatehood and society in South Asia. The security dilemmas–both traditional and nontraditional are the two major focalaspects. PostColonial states of South Asia are passing throughtremendous political, ethnic, economic and communal crises.This region is located in a geopolitically sensitive zone. In most ofthe cases, security dilemmas highlight historically informedmistrusts and an absence of regional integrity. South Asian statesare suffering from energy security issues as well. Due toinsufficient indigenous energy sources all states have extendedtheir dependency towards old and new destinations and alsobegun deliberating on alternative sources for energy security.However, the role of extraregional powers is extremely significantfor regional security and strategy making processes in the region.Understanding how the states of this region have been influencedby extraregional powers is a prime objective of this venture.
