Maxim Gorki was a Soviet author and founder of the socialist realism literary method. He was also a political activist who spent several lengthy stays in Capri and Italy. Mother by Maxim Gorki is a story about the factory workers in the small Russian community of Nizhni-Novgorod were an impoverished, soulless, brutal lot. Their work in the factory dehumanized them and robbed them of their energy as a result, they lived like beasts. When the worker Michael Vlasov died, his wife, Pelagueya, feared that her son Pavel would lead the same anguished, brutal life. Gradually, her son Pavel takes a different path and joins the revolution inspiring many Russians who were living under a capitalistic society in Russia. Gorky saw the "mother country" as supporting her children as they fought for their rights.
