When Katherine Mayo published her book ‘Mother India’ in 1927, it revealed to the world the plight of the Shudras and the women in Indian society. The facts and details that Mayo has put together in this book are eye-opening. This is an eye-witness account. It tells us how horribly Indians treat their own brothers and sisters and how sad the life of an ordinary Indian is. The Savarna nationalist leaders condemned the publication of this book saying it attacked Hindu religion and culture. Gandhi, too, was among them.
