My Dear Bapu: Letters from C. Rajagopalachari to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Devadas Gandhi and Gopalkrishna Gandhi is a collection of letters edited by Gopalkrishna Gandhi. Summary Of The Book In this rare collection, Gopalkrishna Gandhi brings forward eighty unique and mostly unpublished letters written by this contrarian statesman. All these letters have been taken from public repositories and family archives and they cover a time span of 35 years from 1920 to 1955. This means that these letters were written during the struggle for independence, while some of them were written in the early years of independence. Chakravarti Rajagopalachari was popularly known as Rajaji and was Mahatma Gandhi’s closest associate in the Indian independence struggle. Gandhi used to consider Rajaji as his conscience keeper. Though he was nine years younger to Gandhi, he was appointed as the General of the southern region. He used to take part in freedom campaigns headed by Gandhi himself. Rajaji and Mahatma Gandhi shared almost thirty years of friendship. Later, they became relatives as Devadas Gandhi got married to Rajaji’s daughter Lakshmi. The letters collected in My Dear Bapu: Letters from C. Rajagopalachari to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Devadas Gandhi and Gopalkrishna Gandhi describe various events taking place at that time in India. These cover the endeavors and struggles, howsoever small and big, taking place in the public arena. They also talk about the inner world of friends and are written in a frank tone with a brave undertone. Though the tone becomes bitter at times, the respect of the freedom to disagree is never lost. It takes the reader through the lives of these two people and how they used to share almost every thought and feeling with each other. Through these letters, the reader gets to know that they shared each other’s anxieties and hopes about their people as well as the country. Gopalkrishna Gandhi has compiled, annotated, and edited the letters in this book keeping in mind how his father would have done it. The book comes with a personal and enlightening introduction by the author. About Gopalkrishna Gandhi   Gopalkrishna Gandhi was the 22nd Governor of West Bengal and the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. Born on the 22nd of April, 1945, Gopalkrishna Gandhi is the son of Devadas and Lakshmi Gandhi, and the grandson of C. Rajagopalachari. He completed his post graduation in Literature from St. Stephen’s College of Delhi University. Gandhi worked as a member of the Indian Administrative Service and got a chance to be the secretary of the President of India. In 2004, he was appointed the Governor of West Bengal by A. P. J Abdul Kalam. He lives with his wife in Kolkata and both his daughters are married.
