Grafted fruit trees have become more the rule than the exception as gardeners demand more options in backyard trees. You can design your own tree by melding the rootstock from one variety with the scion from another. The rootstock produces the roots and controls the size of the tree as well as its hardiness and tolerance. The scion produces the branches, leaves, flowers and fruit. Uniting the two biologically requires that the appropriate pieces of each tree be joined together using grafting tape.
