About The Author: William Wakefield, an English Colonel, led the inaugural colonizing mission to New Zealand and played a pivotal role in founding Wellington. His leadership style sparked controversy. Intriguingly, he embarked on a journey to Portugal, where he signed up as a mercenary under Dom Pedro, the Emperor of Brazil, despite having no prior military experience. Remarkably, he secured a Captain's position. He endured the Siege of Porto and subsequent military campaigns, earning valuable experience and a collection of medals. Post the Portuguese Campaign, he briefly returned to England and joined the British Auxiliary Legion, fighting for the young Queen Isabella II of Spain during the First Carlist War. He emerged from this conflict as a major, re-enlisted, and eventually attained the rank of Colonel. Among his subordinate officers was Henry Inman, who later became a police commander. Wakefield was one of the few officers to survive the entire campaign, remaining with the Legion until its disbandment in 1837 before returning to England the following year.
