The decision to write about the ‘Fall of Man’ in epic form was necessarily a controlling factor in John Milton’s general construction of Paradise Lost. True to classical epic tradition, Milton begins the work in the middle of his story. Thus, Book-I, after an invocation to the Heavenly Muse for help and a general statement of theme, tells of the condition of Satan and the other fallen angels in Hell, directly after they have been driven out of Heaven.
