Peter Saul and Mary Ltd is a soulbroker, a company that makes its money mining the souls of the dead of mediaeval Europe and selling them to the soul-refineries of the Great Planes. When its financial stability is threatened by the outbreak of the Black Death, Peter Saul and Mary embark on an ambitious manipulation of the course of history. To pull off their plans they must outmanoeuvre a surreal mixture of characters including their major shareholders Jupiter and Saturn, proprietors of the Pantheon Fund Management Alliance, soul-refinery owning tycoon Beelzebub, and frequently each other. A bizarre blend of quasi-religious history, world cataclysm, and office comedy.
