This volume is an outcome of intense discussion and debate held in the Department of Geography, Banaras Hindu University, during the national seminar in February 2010. This volume contains twenty six papers divided into five sections and exploring the relationship among the three dimensions, i.e. population, development and environment especially in the Indian context. First section presents a theoretical framework of the basic understanding of population, development and environment; second section revolves round the various aspects of migration and urbanization; third section is webbed around the socio-economic developmental issues taking case studies from different parts of the country; fourth section highlights the impact of economic development on environment and impact of environment on human development. The last section discusses the planning and policy issues and the data sources needed for research in the holistic study of population, development and environment. Overall, the book adopts a multidisciplinary approach to explore the complex, continuous and eternal relationship between population, development and environment in the context of India, drawing concepts and methods from several academic disciplines like geography, demography, environment, economics, sociology, botany and social work. This book will be useful for academicians, researchers, NGOs, policy makers, planners and all those who are concerned for the common people, the people who are concerned with population, development and environment.
