Princes & Painters in Mughal Delhi 1707-1857, edited by William Dalrymple and Yuthika Sharma, is an enchanting visual document of the 18th and 19th century Delhi. Summary of the Book Delhi was the center of political plotting and power struggles between 1707 and 1857 – the Mughal Empire’s supremacy was waning and the British East India Company was evolving as a daunting authority. In 1857, the Mutiny led to the end of the Mughal power and the beginning of the British Raj. But this stormy era also saw an eruption of artistic revolution, experimentation and novelty. Delhi’s artists were progressively employed by the Company officials, the Mughal and other regional courts. They became experts in improvising, including creating traditional miniatures while frequently testing with a variety of European styles of art. Art historians are now understanding the richness, significance, and inventiveness of the work created during that period.
