Winter’s fieldwork has taken him to Greenland, Labrador, and Norway, where he studied the formation and development of the ancient deep continental crust. He did his undergraduate work in geology at the University of Illinois at Urbana, and earned his M.S. and Ph.D. at the University of Washington in Seattle. Winter lives in the Blue Mountains outside Walla Walla, Washington, with his wife and their two pets.
