A quantity surveyor (QS) is a professional working within the construction industry concerned with building costs. The profession is one that provides a qualification gained following formal education, specific training and experience that provides a general set of skills that are then applied to a diverse variety of problems. Predominantly these relate to costs and contracts for construction projects. Quantity surveyors have this title because they prepare a 'schedule of quantities' — estimates of the material and labour costs — that contractors' tenders can be measured against. The schedule is also called a cost estimate. In addition to producing high quality tender documentation for our own outputs, we also recognize that we can play an important role in ensuring that the documentation produced by others is complete and co-ordinated. Not only does a robust set of tender documentation ensure that the most competitive response is provided by the bidders, it is vital in establishing a robust basis for contract and successful post-contract cost management.
