The modernization of China's military started in the 1990s as defence spending began to grow. Military spending rates went up by over 10 percent each year on average since then and the investment has proven largely successful so far. China's military modernization initially started to deter Taiwan from moving toward independence and complicate the ability of the United States to come to the island's assistance. China's military doctrine-commonly referred to as local war under high tech conditions while still defined by the percepts of People's War and active defence is focused on preparing Chinese military forces to fight small-scale, regional conflicts along China's periphery. As the book addresses this crucial issue quite deftly, it is hoped that it would prove to be a source of great information for the reader. It an essential reading for the students taking courses on Reasons for China's Military Builder and Search for Power. About the Author Mohd. Wasim, Commandant (Retd.) Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), did his B.A. (hons.) and M.A in Economics from University of Bihar in 1965 and 1967 respectively. He joined CRPF in 1968, and elevated to various positions, D.S.P., Dy. Commandant of C.R.P.F. (Battalion). He did most of the toughpretigious courses of C.R.P.F as well as Army. For unity and integrity, paricularly in Assam and J & K he was awarded with Police Medal.
