Amrita Pritam (31.08.1919-31.10.2005), was the first Punjabi poetess to win Jnanpith award for Kagaz te Kanvas, a poetry anthology. In addition, she has been the receipient of various national and international awards for her poems and poetry anthologies. She was awarded the 'Padma Shree' in 1969 by the Government of India and the 'Padma Vibhushan' in 2004. Furthermore, she has 150 original and translated books to her credit. Apart from writing in Punjabi, she has also penned down books in Hindi and English.A woman is the central character of all her stories. Invariably, her stories are woven around women of every class, age, category and profession. These women are depicted as independent and dedicated to their families but seen to be buckling up under societal pressure. They fend for themselves but resign to their fates many a time when tortured by the conditions so created.An attempt has been made by this anthology to shed some fresh light on Amrita Pritam's character and precision with which she has written the stories.
