Some Luck is a novel penned by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Jane Smiley. It delves into the triumphs and defeats of a family, while depicting the first half of the twentieth century itself, in general. Summary of the Book This title begins with the portrayal of the humble and heavily indebted Langdon family farm in 1920. A family of Rosanna and Walter and their newborn, Frank, grows into a family of five children. Each of their children is intelligent, curious, different yet remarkable, and can make their own mark. But as time passes by, some of them become achievers and some fail in their endeavours. Who among them will give up? Who will be forgotten? Set in the backdrop of a time period when economic and political volatility affected individual lives adversely, what course will the lives of the protagonists take after unpredicted incidents occur and startle them with their immense magnitude? Some Luck is the first title in the Last Hundred Years: A Family Saga, a trilogy. It is followed by Early Warning. About Jane Smiley Jane Smiley is a novelist and essayist. She was honoured with the Pulitzer Prize for A Thousand Acres. The novel also won her the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1992. Her other work, The All-True Travels and Adventures of Lidie Newton, won the 1999 Spur Award for Best Novel of the West. Smiley has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters since 1987. Her novel, Horse Heaven, was nominated for the Orange Prize in the year 2002 and Private Life was listed as one of the best books of 2010 by The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and The Washington Post.
