Family system has been one of the most prominent subject in the sociological studies of the Indian Society particularly after nineteen fifties. Most of these studies are based on the premise that the traditional form of Indian family system was Joint Family. Their principal focus is to study the changes which this institution has undergone in India and to examine the present form of family system in India. In this study, the author has favoured and followed the interactional approach and has endeavoured to emphasise the importance of various functional criteria of jointness and studied the joint Family system amongst industrial workers mainly on the basis of this criteria. The study aims at finding out whether th industrial worker adheres to the traditional outlook regarding the institution of joint family or whether the nature of his occupation and continued contact with the urban environment have brought about any change in his role-perception and responsibilities towards the kinship group. This is a very useful and refreshing work which would be of much interest to sociologists in general and family sociologists in particular.
