The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer is a collection of stories about a young boy growing up along the Mississippi River by Mark Twain. Summary of the Book Tom Sawyer can’t seem to keep out of trouble. Living with his Aunt Polly and his half-brother, Sid, in St. Petersburg, by the Mississippi River, he keeps getting into one sort of mischief or the other. He dirties his clothes, and his aunt forces him to whitewash the paint, which he masterfully connives his friends into doing for him. He uses the Sunday School tickets, given to prodigious scholars to exchange for a Bible when one has enough, to procure treasures. An irascible boy, Tom is so troublesome to have around that the superintendent of the school realizes that if there are more like him, he would be at his wit’s end. Tom’s mischief isn’t limited to the elders, for he proposes to Becky Thatcher and gets engaged to her with a kiss, only to have his romance fall apart when the poor girl discovers that Tom was previously “engaged” to another girl.
