The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain is an 1876 novel about a young boy Tom growing up along the Mississippi River with his Aunt Polly and half-brother Sid. As the novel begins, we catch him stealing from the jam jar and narrowly escaping being hit. His life is full of adventurous episodes. What happens as he moves from one escapade to another – accompanying Huckleberry Finn to the graveyard at night where they witness a trio of grave robbers; falling in love with Becky Thatcher and being shunned; enjoying the new found freedom and then being struck by the idea of appearing at his own funeral; hunting for buried treasure in a haunted house with Huck and so on..? The Adventures of Tom Sawyer has been widely adapted into feature films and television series. Mark Twain (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), real name Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. Twain was born shortly after an appearance of Halley's Comet, and he predicted that he would "go out with it" as well; he died the day after the comet returned. He was lauded as the "greatest humorist America has produced", and William Faulkner called him "the father of American literature". He also wrote a sequel to this novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885).
