Summary of the Book In the 1800s, the British Government seizes control of Egypt and ban the worship of the Egyptian Gods. In retaliation, a cabal of magicians seek to set things right by summoning their deities from a time when they were once powerful. They try to summon Anubis and fail, setting a chain of events in motion and opening magical gates in succession throughout time and space. In 1983, an aging millionaire discovers these gates and realizes that they make time travel possible. He hires Brendan Doyle, a professor, to join him and other millionaires on a trip to the past to attend a lecture by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. However, a magician spies the time travelers and kidnaps the professor before he can return. Now trapped in the 19th century, Doyle joins a beggars’ guild and plans to meet William Ashbless, a wealthy poet whose patronage he seeks. However, the magician is still looking for him, and the aging millionaire who organized the time trip is still in the 19th century.
