About Lao Tzu Lao Tzu, known alternatively as Laozi, Lao-tze and Lao-tsu, was a Chinese philosopher and poet. He is best remembered as the founder of philosophical Taoism and he is deified in religious Taoism and traditional Chinese religions. His actual existence is a matter of much speculation, shrouded by myths and legends. Supposedly, Lao Tzu's existence is either dated to around the 6th century BC or the 5th or 4th centuries BC, during the Warring States period.
