About Mario Puzo Mario Puzo was a screenwriter and novelist. Mario Puzo is credited with writing over 11 novels, some which were works of fiction. He also wrote a few short stories. Some of his works include The Godfather, The Dark Arena, Omertà, The Sicilian, and The Fourth K. Born into a poor family of Italian migrants on the 15th of October, 1920, Mario Puzo initially wanted to be an army officer. The United States Air Force rejected Puzo’s application during World War II and he became a public relations officer in Germany instead. Mario Puzo wrote the screenplays for The Godfather and The Godfather Part ll, winning the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1972 and 1974 respectively. He also wrote the screenplays for Superman I and Superman ll. On the 2nd of July, 1999, Mario Puzo passed away in Bay Shore, New York. Omertà and The Family, two of Mario Puzo’s novels, were published posthumously.
