The Odyssey is Homer’s epic tale of the Greek hero Odysseus and his voyages, ten years after the Trojan War. Summary of the Book In a land of monsters, Gods and sorcerers, one man tries to return home from the battlefield of Troy. Odysseus is tired from battle. A Hero of the Trojan war, he has yet to return home ten years after the fall of the great city. After spending seven years in captivity on Calypso’s island, he is saved by his great-grandfather, Hermes, the Messenger of the Gods. Calypso releases him, despite her feelings for him, and the hero sets out on a raft. He is soon set upon by Poseidon, God of the Waters. He is shipwrecked on Scherie, the island of the Phaeacians, where he meets the blind singer Demodocus. He asks Demodocus to tell others the story of the Trojan War, and begins to tell him the story of his attempts to return to his home. His tale, one filled with Cyclops, a curious episode with the Sirens, the evil Sorceress Circe, and adventure, has passed down through millennia, becoming eternal in itself. Sung by the legendary poet Homer himself, the Odyssey has inspired and taught generations of writers and literature lovers about the classic theme of adventure and one man’s thirst for home. About Homer Homer was a Greek poet and writer, considered to be the composer of the Trojan Epics, including the Illiad and the Odyssey. Most of his work is lost, and his identity and existence are the topics of much dispute. He is believed to have lived around 850 BCE. The Odyssey has been adapted several times into films, has inspired other works and songs. It is considered to have inspired the entire genre of epic story-telling and is considered one of the world’s earliest and greatest classics.
