Ben Barclay lives with, and supports, his widowed mother. They have a mortgage on their home, held by Squire Davenport, who informs Ben's mother that she has three months to pay off. Ben makes a trip to New York City to see if they can get financial help from a rich cousin. However, his cousin is in Europe at the time.
