About The Book: It may seem convenient that before entering into the details of the work I should give brief outline of the Yoga System of Patanjali at the very beginning of the work, which I hope may be of some use to the beginners. An Aristotle or a Patanjali may not make any direct mention of the arguments which led them to a dogmatic assertion of their theories, but for a reader who intends to understand them thoroughly it is absolutely necessary that he should read them in the light as far as possible of the inferred presuppositions and inner’ arguments of their minds; In this way alone that he can put himself in the same line of thinking with the thinker he is willing to follow and can grasp him to the fullest extent. About The Author: Surendranath Dasgupta (18 October 1887–18 December 1952) was an Indian scholar of Sanskrit and Indian philosophy. Surendranath Dasgupta was born to a Vaidya family in Kushtia, Bengal (now in Bangladesh), on Sunday, October 18, 1885, corresponding to Dashami Shukla (i.e., the tenth day) of the month of Asvin and coinciding with the festivals of Dussehra and Durga Visarjan. His ancestral home was in the village Goila in Barisal District. He studied at Ripon College in Calcutta, and graduated with honours in Sanskrit. Later, in 1908, he received his master's degree from Sanskrit College, Calcutta. He got a second master's degree in Western philosophy in 1910 from the University of Calcutta. In 1932, he served as president of the Indian Philosophical Congress. His own philosophy was known as Theory of Dependent Emergence.
