The Walking Dead Compendium Volume 1 was published by Image Comics in 2009 and includes issues 1-48 of the award-winning comic book series, which is based on the travels and tribulations of a group of survivors, as they fight zombies from a post-apocalyptic outbreak. Summary Of The Book The Walking Dead Compendium Volume 1 begins before a mysterious attack of zombies grips the town where Rick, the Sheriff's Deputy lives with his wife and son. After being injured in a shootout involving a prisoner, he goes into a coma and awakens from it a month later, in a zombie-infested hospital with corpses all around. He goes home, to find his family missing and heads out to Atlanta in search of them. There, he finds that the zombies have wrecked havoc on the city, leaving only a few survivors. Luckily, Rick finds his son, his wife (who is pregnant) and best friend Shane, living in a temporary camp along with other survivors. He helps the entire group to move to a farm and later, they decide to stay put in a prison protected by a high fence. Their peace, however, is short lived as the ruthless leader of the neighbouring town of Woodbury, the Governor, rapes one of the female survivors and Rick ends up losing his hand. A massive attack on the prison follows, leading to many deaths and a few escapes. The book goes on to chronicle the journey that Rick and his group undertake, in their quest to escape from the zombies, fighting one catastrophe after the other. The Walking Dead Compendium Volume 1 was followed by a second volume that included issues 49-96 of this 2003 series. The Walking Dead won the 2010 Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series and inspired a television series of the same name. This franchise has expanded in multiple directions with the creation of video-games, web-based series, books, and publications like The Walking Dead Weekly (2010). IGN Comics rated the protagonist of the series, Rick Grimes, as the 26th Greatest Comic Book Hero of all time (2011).
