Padmanabhan's Theoretical Astrophysics Volume 3: Galaxies and Cosmology is a comprehensive book for students of astronomy and astrophysics. This book discusses the science of cosmology and extragalactic astronomy, and is intended for an advanced course. It draws on key observational results and introduces students to the necessary terms before progressing to the theory of galactic structure and galactic dynamics, structure formation, cosmic microwave background radiation, formation of luminous galaxies in the universe, intergalactic medium and active galactic nuclei. The book also contains several work exercises, helping students explore the concepts that they have learnt completely, and apply them in practical problems. The book follows a modular approach and, with the other volumes of this seminal set, forms a vital part of any aspiring astrophysicist's library. About T. Padmanabhan Thanu Padmanabhan is an Indian theoretical physicist and cosmologist best known for studying Gravitation, Structure formation in the universe and Quantum Gravity. He has extensively studied the dark energy in the universe, and his interpretation of gravity as an emergent phenomenon has helped the field extensively. Dr. Padmanabhan is a graduate of the University College, Kerala University, where he secured gold medals throughout his undergraduate and postgraduate study. He further pursued his doctorate at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai. He was awarded the Infosys Science Foundation Prize for Physical Sciences, the Padma Shri in 2007 from the President of India, and The Millennium Medal in 2000 from CSIR.
