A critical study of twelve Tamil translations of the Holy Qur'an published between 1937 and 2011. This is a printed version of the doctoral thesis of the same title for which PhD was awarded by Tamil University Tanjavur. It is an in-depth analysis of the translations from a critical comparative perspective. It is doubly comparative in that each Tamil translation is first evaluated in relation to the original Arabic Qur'an and then it is evaluated in relation to the other translations taken up for study. The issues studied include the history of the publication of the translations, the competence of the translator, his motives, affiliations, the principles and procedures adopted, the problems of translations faced, the errors that have crept in and the possible reasons for them, the intended readership, the differences between the translations etc from a linguistic and comparative angle based on standard theories of translation in an objective manner.
