In Those Days, Sunil Gangopadhyay recreates an unforgettable picture of nineteenth century Bengal. Summary of the Book The backdrop of this book is formed by the Bengal Renaissance and the 1857 uprising. It is a story about the strengths and weaknesses of human beings.The tale about the wealthy Singha and Mukherjee families, and the growing bond between them. Bindubasini is the widowed daughter of the Mukherjees. Ganganarayana Singha is in love with her, but their orthodox families will not allow such a union. Bimbabati is Ganganarayan’s mother and Rajkamal’s wife. She has been lonely and depressed ever since her husband found happiness in the arms of a courtesan, Kamala Sundari. The central theme of the novel deals with how the old-fashioned aristocracy awakens to its social obligations. The story also involves many other characters that join in to make the story richer. About Sunil Gangopadhyay Sunil Gangopadhyay was a Bengali poet and novelist. He obtained his Master’s degree in Bengali from the University of Calcutta. He started a Bengali poetry magazine called Krittibas in the year 1953. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1985 for his novel Those Days. He has used pen names like Nil Lohit, Sanatan Pathak and Nil Upadhyay.
