Red okra (Lal Bhindi) is similar to green okra, but the only difference is in color. Red ladyfinger is unknown and not easily available in our local market. This variety of okra is not only expensive because it is not easily available in local areas, but it contains more nutrients than green okra. Red Okra or Lady Finger is not only a great addition to your diet, but also looks lovely during the growing season because of its beautiful flowers. Okra Most people prefer growing okra in container because it does not need much space to grow.*Sowing season: February to March (Summers), June to July (Rainy Season).Mode of sowing: Sow the seeds 1/2 to 1 inch deep in a seedling tray or Container, or Pots.*Germination Time: 4 to 6 days from sowing.*Germination temperature: 18 to 30°C.*Harvesting: 60 to 70 days.*Plant vigor: Strong plant with short internodes.*Summer season is the best season for growing red okra plants, it germinates fast in warm weather. Best month for sowing red okra hybrid seeds is February-March, June-July and October-November.*Red Okra (Lady Finger) Hybrid seeds are usually sown directly rather than transplanting because okra has long taproot and doesn’t transplant well. To grow red okra, select a pot or grow bag (12-24 and 12-15 inches wide and deep) with well drainage holes. Before watering the red lady finger plant, check that the soil is dry because okra is a vegetable grown in the summer season, it is necessary to water it from time to time.*Take a pot or grow bag, fill with mixture of soil and organic fertilizer or potting mix then sow 2-3 red okra seeds per container about 0.5 to 1 inch deep in soil. Water gently with a sprayer and keep the seedling in a bright and warm place. Keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate. Red Okra Hybrid seeds will germinate in about 5 to 10 days.*Once the okra plant reaches a height of 5-6 inches, add any organic manure such as vermicompost, cow manure or neem cake. It helps in producing more fruit.*Sunlight – Red Okra or lady finger plants need at least 6-8 hours full sunlight in a day.*Water – Water regularly to your red okra plants. It can also tolerate dry conditions; give 1 liter of water per week and keep the soil moist especially in growing season.*Soil – Okra (lady finger) plant prefers well drained, loamy and fertile soil for better growth of plants.*Temperature – The ideal temperature for growing red okra is 15-35 degree Celsius.*Common pests – Pests that affects the Okra (lady finger) plants are Aphids, Corn earworms and Stinkbugs. Powdery mildew is the most common disease that infected the okra plants. Use organic pesticide neem oil; it protects the plant from harmful pests.*Within 2 months of planting, red okra start flowering. As okra are self-pollinated (means they produce flowers that contain both male and female parts) and are fertilized by their own pollen. So you don’t need to care about pollination. A fruit start to appear in okra plant after 5-7 days of flowering.
